"At the annual competition Press conference in December 1976, BMW Motorsport GmbH officially announced that they would contest the German National Championship's (`DRM´ = Deutsche Rennsport-Meisterschaft) Division 2 with a three-car ‘BMW Junior-Team' mounted in 320i saloons. Junior-Team members were Eddie Cheever, Manfred Winkelhock and Marc Surer. Competition was quite hot, and on one occasion, for having behaved exceptionally unruly, Marc Surer's license was suspended for one race.
Based on the E21 pressed-steel bodyshell, a Group 5 320 featured basic production framework in steel, i.e. floor pan, roof, bulkheads, etc., but the whole was clothed by aerodynamic bodywork. Doors, bonnet, front end and large wheelarch extensions front and rear were all fibreglass, as was the trunk lid with the wing supports.

An M12/7 Formula 2 four-cylinder racing engine was mated to all this. In an effort to find some basic balance, Motorsport's engineers moved the engine 120 mm back toward the front bulkhead. Simultaneously, the engine was lowered in the chassis by 60 mm. To complement the lower and rearward disposition of the engine, BMW also moved the driver's seat to the rear. Subsequently, that meant moving back pedals and steering column. Plexiglass was used for all but the laminated windscreen.
Apart from the Junior Team, several private entrants such as ‘Warsteiner' GS-Tuning, Heidegger's ‘Fruit of the Loom' Team, ‘Jägermeister' BMW Faltz and Hohmann-Auto-Technik relied on the 320i during the '77 DRM season.
Driving these cars were Jörg Obermoser, Peter Schneeberger, Harald Grohs and Peter Bienefeld, whereas H.J. Stuck, Helmut Kelleners and the late Ronnie Peterson jumped in occasionally."
