"In autumn of 1962 the new Colt 600 entered the market as the follow up model to the Mitsubishi 500. The technique (two cylinder rear engine) was the same with an identical wheelbase, but the Colt clearly grew in size in comparison to the old model. A couple of months later the notchback was added to the Colt range. The timely design with large window spaces was created by Giovanni Michelotti. In the same year the Mitusbishi Colt estate car was additionally released. In 1964 Mitsubishi sold nearly 30.000 colt estate cars. In 1965 Mitsubishi ranked fourth among the Japanese car manufacturers with 46.000 sales. In the same year the successor of the type 600 was released, namely the Colt 1500. Only one month after the market introduction of the Colt 1500, the new Colt 800 F was released. Due to the successful colt family the production reached a new peak with 130.253 cars in 1968. In the 1970s and early 1980s the Colt received a lot of attention in the press, especially in Europe and the USA due to an unusual overdrive gearbox with two separate gear sticks. The combination of four advance gears with two reversible “overdrive” gear reductions theoretically realized eight advance gears, of which only six could be used meaningfully."
