"In February 2001 BMW presented a street legal race car, the M3 GTR with a V8 engine. The car was built at BMW from 2002 on and took part in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), where it accomplished numerous victories. The flexible production possibilities of BMW Individual allowed the manufacturing of a street legal batch series.
The use of carbon fibre body parts and the total abandonment of comfortable equipment turn the two-seater into a purist, which gives the M3 GTR an empty weight of 1350 kilogram. The 4,0 litre V8 engine with an angle of 90 degrees has its basic features in accordance with the more than 450 HP strong race version. Due to the modified exhaust and noise regulations the engine placed in the civilized street version still accomplishes more the 258 KW (350 HP).

The BMW M3 GTR street version is technologically wise as closely as possible adapted to the race version. This includes a light weight V8 engine, a six speed manual and a dual disc sport clutch as well as a limited M slip differential.
Just like the race car, the weight reduction is due to the carbon fibre strengthened plastic parts, namely the roof, the rear wing as well as the front and rear apron. The increased front and rear apron in combination with the rear wing optimize the aerodynamics of the M3 GTR. Additional cooling slots on the bonnet ensure the thermal well being of the high performance engine.
The BMW M3 GTR is extremely lowered and disposes of a fine tuned sportive chassis. The compact V8 high performance race engine leads to an ideal weight distribution, which in combination with 19 inch rims and the according tyres guarantees an extraordinary handling character.
